Unpaved Gallery is pleased to present LOST WEEKEND a solo show of Joshua Tree artist Coco Hall.

 

Coco's love of faux bois, fleece, zippers, flocking, velvet, faux fur, and papiér mache all converge in LOST WEEKEND. Hall's work is submerged in the darkest corners of our wildly disassembling world, and though she is longing to represent it with accuracy, it all seems to emerge as fun. In her explorations of addictions, Cheetos, exploding food, fear of robots, and fleecy rats, ultimately we are confronted with our uncertainties about the future.

Coco graduated from Bennington College in Vermont, where she majored in sculpture and minored in ceramics. Upon graduating, Hall launched a cottage industry that produced quirky children's toys and winged baseball caps. Her Vegimals -- plush and colorful vegetables and fruits with smiling faces -- developed a cult following that long outlived their period of manufacture: her Peas in a Pod was featured in the 2010 film Toy Story, and a Pea is in a Fluxus edition by George Brecht in Harvard’s Fogg Museum. Coco's success in toy design was founded in her love of soft sculpture and her fascination with the endless variations in texture of different materials, as well as her highly individual sense of humor. These same qualities are much in evidence in her current art works, while some of them also draw on her twenty years' involvement as an animal and environmental activist. 

 

Today, she maintains an art studio in Joshua Tree, CA.

Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums from New York to Los Angeles.
