SLOW BURN

May 11, 2019 - June 16, 2019

Unpaved Gallery is pleased to present “Slow Burn” a solo show by artist Kyla Hansen.

In this exhibition, Hansen has focused on the passage of time being the seer of all truths carving away and creating space. Time has allowed new vantage points to be discovered. “Slow Burn”is an amalgamation of catalysts that have sparked a continuous smoldering of captivation in Hansen’s studio practice.  These pieces have evolved over time creating a dialog within the space and the mind of the artist. Like a slow growing cacti and rock formations, these pieces have found their way to realization.

Hansen lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received her Master of Fine Art from Claremont Graduate University in 2012 and her Bachelor of Fine Art from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2009. Working in the desert tradition of assemblage, Hansen uses the desert landscape as language to explore gender. Her densely fabricated sculpture and installation work delves into narrative archetypes of female, animal, plant, and mineral imagery and explores ideas of female domestication and wildness. Hansen’s text-based quilts collage together physical language, clothing remnants, architectural fragments, spray painted lines, neon lights, and fabric, mimicking the patched-together-nature of Mojave Desert ghost houses.

Hansen’s work has been exhibited throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area including Five Car Garage, Torrance Art Museum, Cerritos College Art Gallery, Eastside International, Western Project, and the UCLA New Wight Gallery. Her work was recently exhibited Internationally at the Material Art Fair, Mexico City, MX and the exhibition Bloody Red Sun of Fantastic LA, a survey exhibition of emerging Los Angeles-based artists, at Piasa Auction House, Paris France. Her work has been recognized in several publications including Modern Painters Magazine’s 24 Artists to Watch in 2013. Hansen has upcoming exhibitions at Pasadena City College Art Gallery, FOCA LA, and the Barrick Art Museum, Las Vegas, NV.
